Heartfelt Harvest

Heartfelt Harvest

On 17 July 2014, a missile hit Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 and killed all 298 people on board. The debris landed across three main sites in Eastern Ukraine, including a field of sunflowers near the village of Rassypnoe.

Fairfax journalist, Paul McGeough, and photojournalist, Kate Geraghty, were reporting from the crash site when they decided to collect sunflower seeds as mementoes for the victims’ families and friends. This began a year-long campaign with the Australian Department of Agriculture to produce viable, pest-free seeds in Australia and then dispatch the seeds around the world in time for the first anniversary.
